It’s high-octane hangover insurance.
Hangover cures are often seen as snake oil, ranging from coffee to dog hair.
However, UK-based TV doctor Zoe Williams has come up with a snack that’s scientifically proven to sponge up the sponge behind a washer: a bacon, egg and avocado sandwich.
Dreamed up in collaboration with UK bakery Warburton’s, this seemingly counterintuitive drink consists of the perfect combination of nutrients to restore the balance of salts, sugars and proteins lost during the drink, the Daily Mail reported.
Hangover vomiting occurs because alcohol makes the liver less effective at regulating blood sugar levels, triggering hormones that make us feel groggy.
The restorative powers of this sandwich begin with its bread, which should be half wholemeal and half white, according to Williams, a general practitioner.
While whole-wheat bread is generally healthier, strong-tasting grains can often trigger nausea, so cutting it with white bread makes it easier to sit down—like a carb-laden springboard to ease into. in reducing hangovers.
“With a half-and-half loaf, like Waburtons, you still get protein and fiber, which provide a combination of instant energy and a slow-release kind of energy,” Williams said.
Protein contains an essential amino acid called lysine that speeds up the breakdown of alcohol in the liver, she explained.
Why throw away bacon, which, like alcohol, has been linked to bowel cancer and other issues?
Williams explained that it helps replenish sodium stores, one of the main electrolytes that are shed when drinking. The other is potassium, which the sandwich has with yeast.
“It can help that kind of brain fog you have with a hangover,” Williams said. “Some experts say that even just the smell of bacon can technically start to help the brain recover.”
Eggs are the “hero” when it comes to defeating the ghost of past binges, according to Williams.
“It doesn’t matter how you cook it. “Eggs are full of nutrients that are especially good for curing a hangover,” she said.
These building blocks include protein, vitamins A and D, and vitamin B12, which is depleted during drinking.
Throw in avocado’s energy-boosting healthy fats, as well as vitamins and minerals such as potassium — which is also consumed during hangovers — and you’ve got the perfect triple threat to keep the booze away.
Eating the sandwich before or while using the sauce is optimal, according to Williams. This is because doing so slows the absorption of alcohol into the bloodstream.
She recommended that revelers “stop drinking at least two hours before going to bed and switch to drinking water.”
