As fast food chains raise prices across the country, one has come out on top as the most expensive of them all.
A new study found that Shake Shack received the most complaints about overpricing, followed by Five Guys, which has been criticized for its “out of control” prices.
Earlier this year, Shake Shack raised menu prices by 3%, the burger chain’s CFO Katie Fogertey said during an investor call.
The Post has reached out to Shake Shack for comment.
The study, carried out by Preply, also found that celebrity-owned restaurants regularly received complaints about overpricing – in particular, Gordon Ramsay’s restaurants.
“While customers may be willing to pay a premium for a trendy atmosphere and the name of their favorite celebrity chef in the building, they may feel disappointed if the food served and the service provided does not match the quality they expect.” were waiting,” the authors write.
Despite NYC being home to many A-list owned hot spots and Shake Shack locations, the Big Apple was actually considered the place with the least overpriced restaurants. Meanwhile, Oakland, California had the most expensive restaurants, followed by San Jose, California and Virginia Beach, Virginia.
The authors determined the results for overpricing by searching for keywords in restaurant reviews in each city, such as “expensive” or “rip off,” and analyzed how often they were used by customers.
The study comes amid price hikes at fast-food chains across the country, which has angered customers.
Chipotle was the latest to suffer the wrath of customers, as former fans swore off the restaurant due to high prices, vowing to spend their money on competitors.
Meanwhile, a study found that McDonald’s prices have risen over 100%. The chain, however, argued that the findings were inaccurate.
“As the report itself notes, pricing is determined by individual franchisees and varies by restaurant,” a company spokesperson told The Post at the time.
“This is not an accurate representation of historical or current prices at McDonald’s restaurants and the 2024 average prices listed are significantly inflated.”
McDonald’s USA President Joe Erlinger also released a statement explaining that menu item prices have only increased a fraction, claiming that the price of a Big Mac, on average, has only increased 21%.
