Despite appearances, there is nothing wrong with this health tip.
When it comes to living longer, New York physician Dr. Michael Aziz has a number of supplements he recommends to his patients – but adding just one can add more than four years to your life.
After telling the Post this month that taurine could help you live 7 to 8 years longer, he now says that adding another pill has similar life-extending benefits and is great for the heart, blood pressure and even your skin.
“We know that people who eat fish live longer, and the reason is that fish oil is rich in omega-3s, which have heart-healthy benefits,” said Aziz, author of the forthcoming book The Ageless Revolution. .
In fact, a 2021 study from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in Barcelona found that higher levels of omega-3 acids in your blood can add nearly five years to your lifespan.
“Being a regular smoker takes 4.7 years off your life expectancy, the same as having high levels of omega-3 acids in your blood,” said Dr. Aleix Sala-Vila, author of the study.
Those omega-3s can come simply from eating fish like tuna, salmon and shrimp, but if you’re not getting enough from your diet, a supplement can make a difference.
The type of fish can make a difference, too: Women who ate small fish like sardines whole — head to bone — showed a lower risk of dying from cancer and other causes in a Japanese study published in early this year.
Aziz says fish oil can help with a list of health concerns, including fighting inflammation, increasing good cholesterol levels, preventing plaque build-up in arteries and reducing liver fat.
He noted that it can also help give you glowing skin because polyunsaturated fatty acids are thought to reduce inflammation and help keep skin hydrated.
Worried about taste? The document says to the power. “I think the benefits outweigh any potential side effects.”
It helps a little more longevity
To really maximize the impact, Aziz also recommends adding selenium and Ubiquinol or CoQ10. Both help maintain the length of our telomeres, which play a key role in aging.
“Longer telomeres mean longer life,” he said.
