A mother has been left furious after her daughter was shamed for being too thin.
Her 10-year-old self was hanging out with friends when they made a comment about her looks.
Recently, the Year 6 student fell out with her old friends and joined a new group.
“She has now made friends with some other lovely girls and everything was fine. Until today,” said the mother.
‘stick thin’
But a friend from her previous group shattered that peace.
“One of the girls in the group she was with came up to her and said that one girl said my daughter was ‘stick thin’ and told her to eat more,” she confessed.
The mental health nurse remained angry, drawing on her career experience.
“I’m absolutely alive,” she said.
“I have young daughters with eating disorders. Many of these patients of mine have had weight comments made for them at a young age, creating a lifelong battle with food. “
‘Just as harmful’
Turning to a parenting forum, she asked for advice.
While her daughter wasn’t fat shaming, the mother still worried about the comment’s effect on her body.
“For me, it’s potentially just as damaging and I’m so angry,” she explained.
Frustrated, the mother took the matter to the Deputy Director, insisting that action be taken.
“I want to write the girls mother and tell them what their bad soda [kids] have said, but I don’t know if it’s going to make things better or worse,” she revealed.
Now, she’s wondering what she can do to prevent it from happening again moving forward.
The comments section of the forum was divided by her reaction.
“It’s an unfair thing to say, but you honestly won’t be doing yourself any favors if you contact the girl’s mother directly,” warned one mother.
“You’ll look like an idiot if you turn a casual comment into a major incident at school,” said another.
“I think you may be spiraling down the eating disorder rabbit hole a bit. Don’t make a big deal of it at this stage,” added a third.
The mother agreed that her reaction may have been overreacting.
“Maybe I’m overreacting. I just know firsthand how devastating body-shunning comments can be for girls, especially at this age, and it scares me,” she shared.
“It probably upset me more than my daughter.”
