Naming the best cuisine in the world will be divisive – one person’s trash is another’s delicacy.
However, travel guide TasteAtlas has taken a look by analyzing user ratings, which rated Greek food as the best overall of the world’s 100 best cuisines.
Meanwhile, the United States ranked outside the top ten in this culinary decathlon, but still fared better than our neighbors across the pond in the UK.
To determine who deserved a spot on this Olympic food podium, TasteAtlas analyzed 477,287 reviews for 15,478 foods in their database. Listed under each entry were their top rated foods.
Perhaps it’s fitting that the country that invented democracy was chosen via crowdsourcing in this highly subjective countdown.
That’s right, Greece stood atop the culinary Olympus, boasting a score of 4.6 out of 5 five stars.
Culinary highlights including Fystiki Aeginas (a special type of Greek pistachio), Finiki Lakonias olive oil and Santorini Fava beans, per TasteAtlas.
In second place was Italy (4.59), whose essential dishes included parmesan cheese, gianduja (a sweet chocolate and hazelnut spread, of which Nutella is the most popular brand) and Neapolitan pizza.
The latter, which is notably the basis for the iconic NY-style pie, was also ranked second in TasteAtlas’ compilation of the 100 best dishes on Earth.
Rounding out the top five on this delightful Mount Rushmore were Mexican (4.52), Spanish (4.5) and Portuguese (4.5) cuisines.
Meanwhile, American cuisine ranks 13th in the world (4.42), according to TasteAtlas, which declared American lobster, smoked Pacific salmon and South Texas-style BBQ as the crème de la crème of American culinary culture.
And, as a big consolation, NYC legends Russ & Daughters and Keens Steakhouse were named two of the must-try restaurants in the country.
The UK was not so lucky, coming in a miserable 48th place (just behind Macedonian cuisine) with a score of 4.15.
Equally surprising was the position of Chinese cuisine at number 10, considering the breadth and variety of their gastronomy, from the delicious dishes of Shanghai braised pork to the value of fresh seafood of the Planet Blue in Hong Kong.
